Cell Phone Drive

The Cell Phone Drive is a collection drive through which people donate their used cell phones
(with or without chargers) to the Beacon Center.
We in turn distribute the working phones to clients as 911 phones.

Want to organize a cell phone drive?

It’s fun.  It’s easy.  And, your friends, family, neighbors,
and co-workers will thank you for putting their
old cell phones to good use.

Suggestions?

Make it a family affair and work within
your neighborhood, church or sporting
events.  Or, make it a group effort at work
and challenge your co-workers to join in.

Special reminders

Before donating a cell phone, please remember to instruct all donors to:

  • Erase any stored information, including contact lists, text messages, and listings of incoming and outgoing numbers.

  • Make sure the phone is no longer active and the service plan has been cancelled (or properly transferred).

How cell phone donations are used?

In two critical ways:

  • Phones in good working order are provided to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault  as life lines to be used in the case of emergencies.

  • Phones not in good working order, and any in excess, are recycled to reduce toxic waste and to raise funds for victim services.

How do cell phones act as life lines?

FCC regulations require all phones to be able to dial 911 regardless if there is an active service plan.  Donated cell phones programmed to 911 are provided to victims to carry in case they need emergency help.
