Why Life Skills?

Many survivors of abuse report having been extremely isolated by their abuser. They were prevented from developing basic life skills. The following have been commonly reported:

  • Prevented from finishing their education

  • Prevented from finding sustainable work

  • Limited exposure to money management Inability to develop a successful routine due to a chaotic home

 

Possible areas of focus may include:

  • Employment

  • Education

  • Money Management

  • Time Management

  • Meal Planning

  • Health and Self Care Self

  • Management Negotiation/Conflict Management

  • Daily Living

  • Healthy Relationships

  • Communication

  • Decision Making

  • Stress Management

  • Relaxation Techniques

  • Problem Solving

  • Interpersonal Skills

 

Who is eligible?

Services from Beacon Center are available for free to anyone with a history of domestic abuse or sexual assault.

Not just another program

There are no certificates of completion. This is not a twelve-step process. It is self-paced and completely customizable. Each client works one-on-one to develop their personal goals related to areas they want to focus on. The mission of the program is to provide clients the ability to build confidence in skills that will positively impact their overall wellbeing.

Would you like to improve any of the following areas:

 

Finance:

  • Do you know how to develop a budget?

  • Do you know how much your monthly expenses are?

  • Do you know how to write a check?

  • Do you know how to read a bank statement?

 

Home:

  • Do you know how to use household cleaning items?

  • Such as a mop, broom, vacuum, or duster?

  • Do you know how to clean a toilet?

  • Do you know how to clean a shower?

  • Do you know how to use a computer?

 

Health / Safety:

  • Do you know how to use a cell phone to receive emergency alerts?

  • Do you know how to stay safe in a parking lot?

  • Do you know how often to see a primary care doctor?

  • Do you know how to treat lice and bed bugs?

 

Kitchen / Food:

  • Do you know cooking keywords (chop, bake, boil, fry, grill, roast)?

  • Do you know the difference between a sell-by date and an expiration date?

  • Do you know how to properly store leftovers?

Laundry:

  • Do you know when / how to use bleach?

  • Do you know how to use an iron and ironing board?
